Dog faces and a horse in the crowd

The concept of posting "dog faces in the crowd" did not start out as a regular feature of the blog showcasing items for sale thru Pet Stuff Resale:)
It was a one time thing from me visiting vet clinics on a regular basis and seeing some great "FACES", but has become popular so it continues...

This is Candy, supervising her owners cleaning up the edge of their property in Hockley. What a shame they have to clean up after people throwing trash out of their vehicles. Many people have golf carts out here, Candy says this one is hers, she lets them borrow it from time to time.

This blog is purposely upbeat and does not get into the negative parts of rescue that I experience.

This picture was taken to celebrate Abby's life, not to dwell on her death over the weekend: she was 29 years old! I say that deserves mention and celebration! She was not a rescue, was owned by my realtor and now great bud Razelle(my host when escaping the Magnolia fires) for all those years. She enjoyed being ridden until earlier this year, wow! They probably stopped riding before she wanted them to, especially as she had buddy horses to take with her. Thanks Raz, for being such a good owner.

Seen at Jester Plaza vet clinic recently were Munch and Lucy!

Peanut is a tiny male chihuahua being fostered
thru Citizens for Animal Protection. When he came
into the shelter he weighed only 3.2 lbs! He is now a little over
4 lbs. and is altered, so ready for adoption.

He has 2 luxating patellas and still has his baby teeth. He just had a dental and the vet saw no reason to remove
the teeth..Peanut is about a year old and will need a very special home.
He is a little shy, but not sad..this picture was taken less than 24 hours after his surgery..

Sugar Bear and her buddy ______Bear, were walking thru a parking lot when they stopped briefly to have their picture taken. Actually the buddy was not interested in even slowing down, much less stopping for long! Sugar Bear is part lab and part Shar Pei.

Please share this blog with your buds.
Pet Stuff Resale saves people money and keeps stuff out of landfills.
A portion of sales goes to my rescue efforts, usually heartworm positive dogs or hospice ones.

Can you be open minded about pit bulls?

This is Bahrain, 4 months old, already neutered.
Branching out from showcasing items from Pet Stuff Resale, in this post 2 foster dogs are being profiled. Citizens for Animal Protection is one of the few shelters that evaluates pit type breeds instead of automatically euthanizing or turning them away. Potential adopters are screened specifically about their interest in the breeds.
These two unrelated pups have mild upper respiratory infections and needed about 10 days in isolation.

The economy and fires have reduced adoption options so drastically that it will be even tougher than usual to place them. These two are protected by having a foster, but still need wide exposure to find them good homes. Please share this so I can take the next 2 dogs that need me.

He has NOT had an ear enhancement procedure!

Trying to showcase Bahrains freckles was tough; there are so many neat
smells in the woods to distract the dogs. I am not even guessing as to each ones primary breed.
Colonel is a 5 month old pit mix, also neutered. He is about 40 lbs and a little more macho right now than Bahrain, who is a 35 lb wuus.

Yea, they are both crate trained!
They both can sit on command and they have heard of "stay", but are convinced I can't possibly mean it. Many, many photos were taken to get just 2-3 with as little motion"blur" as possible.

1$ raffle benefits Romeo the poodles' cracked jaw

This precious 3 year old came into a shelter over a year ago. He would have been immediately euthanized at most shelters due to his medical needs. He had absolutely
no hair due to sarcptic mange and deep skin infection from scratching, was horribly emaciated, limping from a permanent leg injury, a cracked jaw and of course heavily loaded with heartworms. Not surprisingly, he also had a serious distrust of humans.

Due to dedicated, unwavering care by Rebecca the Poodle Queen, Romeo now has hair!
He has been treated for heartworms.
He is learning how to play like a dog should and to relate to humans.
He has picked up weight and does not appear to have problems eating.
Our wonderful vet at Westbury, Dr Chalkley, examined his jaw and said wiring it is possible and he shouldn't have any major problems after that it done. The jaw will deteriorate if it is not fixed fairly soon.

Here's where you can help inexpensively. Pet Stuff Resale is raffling off a gorgeous Queen afghan in shades of green, mauve and cream for 1.00 a ticket. It will be displayed in the Annex part of the Citizens for Animal Protection Thrift store, which is just to the left of the Greater Good. There will be a big bowl(which will move around, so I can't say it is in a certain place!) Just put your name and a phone number on any white 3x5card(to keep all cards equal). Ask anyone you can to enter. The winner will be announced on Sunday Dec 13th at the CAP Holiday Open House.
It also looks much better "in person".
Unlike other raffles, you will not be solicited to buy a timeshare or scuba lessons
for entering!

I will have pictures of Romeo in a future post.

A second beneficiary of the raffle will be some of the many dogs coming in with heartworms.

Some of you may remember when I let people pet a crippled chihuahua for .25 to raise funds for his orthopedic surgery. Two Bits now Ricky, raised close to 1500.00!

Thank you for helping to spread the word.

Shopping at both rooms of the Thrift Store benefits the animals at the shelter and is particularly fun the last quarter of the year because so many donations come in for end of the year tax write offs!

Parrots have Christmas buffet in January

What a delight to crash the Parrot People's Christmas party today at Citizens for Animal Protection! Yes,they purposely (and sensibly) hold it in January
when it's more relaxing and so much less hectic for both people and birdies. I was not aware of this engaging practice or I would have taken my camera.

Several of the birds shared their owners plate, picking and choosing what they wanted. Peaches liked anything with cheese, said "Ptooey" to the cranberry sauce.
One bird is almost addicted to the marrow...yes it is a little weird to watch a bird eat fowl, such as a turkey leg.

CAP has a Quaker parrot up for adoption and Molly tried turkey and liked it. She was not impressed with her Fritos, however.

Even though I have several parrots and enjoy watching their reaction to new foods, it was particularly enjoyable to watch a group of birds with their owners
and partake of the camaraderie.

Frankie a special guest at the CAP gala

Last Saturday, for the first time since his legs were broken on Sept 20th by a hit and run driver,
Frankie walked unaided, at the Citizens for Animal Protection gala. Escorted by the 2vets who "wired" him back together, he actually pranced down the runway!
He has made such great progress that Dr Chalkley has discontinued his hydrotherapy, which he hated, and we are now on to controlled walks.
Frankie will be available for adoption after the holidays to a family with a buddy dog, so please keep an eye out for the perfect home for him.
On this Thanksgiving Day I am particularly grateful for all the many people who donated money for his surgery, taken such an interest in his progress and to Westbury Animal Hospital which has done so much for me over the years.

Frankie pulls another cast off!

He's really feeling good and probably does it for all the attention he gets at Westbury Animal Hospital as well. Everyone there is so solicitious of him and anxious for him to recover well.
Back we went on Friday and got a dark green bandage with Dr Flores usual creative artwork on it. He's mulling what color to wear for the gala. Aaaacckk, I haven't found a dress yet!
Dr Chalkley told me that Frankie really needs to keep the bandage on and I replied
"Talk to the paw", so he gave Frankie a stern look and Frankie licked him....

Good news from Frankies vet!

Frankie pulled his turquoise cast off Sunday night so off we went Monday morning to get a new one, royal blue this time. (Thanks to my buds who have donated gas money
to the cause.)
For the first time Dr Chalkley has been openly optimistic about Frankie rather than guarded. He took more xrays and said he is healing nicely. I am so pleased.
Frankie is becoming a little rambunctious with the cooler weather and it's so good to see him feeling better, even though I have to be the bad guy and keep him curtailed.

Frankie prepares for the CAP gala!

Frankie will be an honored guest at the Citizens for Animal Protection gala on November 17th. He's mostly preparing by resting up and today went to CAP to have his picture made for the program. He is secure enough in his neutered masculinity to be able to wear turquoise Vet Wrap!

His primary care vet, Dr. Chalkley and his wife and Dr Jonathan Cooper have received special invitations to the gala also. Check out the CAP website, cap4pets.org for all the gala info.

Frankie recuperating well after tibia break

This week he is sporting a bright yellow bandage. Dr Chalkley cut out the word "BOO" in black VetWrap and it looked so cute down his cast, but Frankie demolished it on the way home before I could even get a picture.

An Italian greyhound I am fostering broke her radius and ulna last Tuesday while playing with her son; the cool weather being the culprit, so there are now 3 orthopedic cases under my care!

Frankie suffers yet another break

I can barely type this; I take him into Petsmart in a buggy on his huge pillow with a leash on so he doesn't try to jump out, yet he did today and broke the tibia in his already mangled leg. I was standing by him and still couldn't reach him fast enough as he went over the opposite side of the buggy.
Kim from CAP immediately drove in from Sugarland on her day off to Fry Road and rushed him back to Dr Chalkley at Westbury.I just happened to have doggie pain meds in my truck so that helped. Initials xrays aren't great, they will do some more diagnostic work on Friday and see if they can still try to save the leg.
Dr C was nice enough to worry about the extension of my time involved with doing the rehab, but I told him that was not a problem.
Except for horrendous pain at first, Frankie was wagging his tail and licking everyones hands at the clinic, what a great dog he is.
I feel so badly about this.

Frankie's Suitemate Monte

This is the one year old Jack Russell turned in for being too active. She also has an unexplained leg fracture so has to be crated for a month, hence her association to Frankie in the "orthopedic wing".
She is being very good even though wanting to play as badly as Frankie does.
Monte is now spayed and will make a wonderful pet in a home that understands this active breed. She will also need a buddy dog.
For some reason I cannot get her photo to upload, will keep trying.

Megan looking for a home at age 8 due to an overseas move

What a nice dog; she is calm not because she is older, she just has a gentle personality. I'm not even sure what she is, but weighs maybe 35 lbs and those ears
fold so nicely!
She is spayed, heartworm negative, housebroken and ready to go to a new home. Imagine
uprooting a dog at age 8...
I had her in the cat room with no reaction at all.
I forgot to get her incoming number at Citizens For Animal Protection but her description should be enough to find her.

Frankie has a great checkup!

On Friday he got his sutures out and the front leg looks very good. He is now supposed to exercise it a little except the back leg is not ready for exercise yet! He had that cast changed and the leg looks pretty good; the muscles are contracting and need physical therapy except he needs the cast on for a while longer so we can't get started yet. Dr Chalkley at Westbury Animal Hospital took more xrays to make sure
of his progress. He also removed the sutures on that leg.
We go back on Tuesday for another evaluation.
The Chronicle ran an expanded article on Frankie on Friday and more donations have started coming in. There is currently about 1800.00 of the 3000.00 needed in Frankies Fund at CAP.
