Doggies, doggie duds and doggie beds in at Pet Stuff Resale

 Rica at 7 lbs is sporting a BRIGHT sweata that would actually fit a slightly longer dog better and up to 9 lbs. It is 4.00 at Pet Stuff Resale. Rica at 5 years is still looking for a permanent home thru CAP after being given up by a backyard breeder of a different breed.

Ricky at 9 lbs is wearing a another bright sweata that would fit a slightly longer dog and up to 11 lbs.4.00 A stray from BARC, Ricky is also looking for his permanent home from CAP.

This is a neat travel bed from IKEA. The front piece above fits into the base for dog napping, then folds nicely to save space while traveling. (see below left) It also comes with a foldable water bowl 23.00

This plush bed from Costco has a removeable pillow and V e r y soft fleece. The zipper is hidden in the back under a separate piece of material not seen in less well made beds. 22.00

Adoption chihuahuas model camo jacket at Pet Stuff Resale

Cricket on the right and Meerkat below are modeling
this darling Size 1 camo jacket. They are actually hoping to get some media attention so they can get adopted as they are currently my fosters.

I purposely posed a male and a female in it because
it has a pink lining,which I have never seen paired
with camo, so it can be considered unisex! It is 4.00 at Pet Stuff Resale.

Cricket has been featured on this blog before; he was found wandering with a broken leg and had to
have a metal plate inserted, so he will have to be hand scanned at the airport for life. He is 3 years
old and needs an all adult home. He would like to have a play buddy.

Meerkat and her heartworms were turned into an animal shelter last year. She is 7 years old and has been successfully treated for them. She would be fine with other dogs or as
a solo dog in an all adult home.

Rocco the chihuahua gets another chance at life

This tiny(4.73 lbs)chihuahua was taken to an Animal Emergency Clinic when he got out of his house/yard and hit by a car.His family could not afford the recommended orthopedic surgery for his broken tibia, so took him to an animal shelter hoping for a better outcome for him than they could provide.
In the current economy this type of surgery is out of the
reach of most shelters and rescue groups, so I am going to foster him in a soft cast and see if it will heal adequately.(It won't be great but hopefully manageable) This is last resort orthopedic care and I do not recommend this method under normal circumstances.
He will require weekly vet visits for monitoring and for that I will be going to Westbury Animal Hospital and
Dr Jeff Chalkley again, my hero for several past orthopedic miracles in dogs.
Dr Toby Shows of Kingsland Blvd Animal Clinic has
been wonderful for orthopedics also.It is one of my rescue interests since my days working with retired racing greyhounds.
The strip over his back is part of his pain patch that was stapled into him and it was removed today.
Rocco is neutered and heartworm negative; he will be looking for a home where open doors
are monitored so tiny babies cannot get out.

Heartworms are SO preventable say these chihuahuas

Both of these precious babies came into a shelter with heartworms. As small as they both are, the treatment is much harder on them, more expensive and more time consuming.

Skeeter on the left also has a grade 4 heart murmur, common in heartworm positive dogs, which

makes his treatment even trickier. Rica on the right came in from a backyard breeder of another

breed, which just compounds this felony.

They both wanted the camera to go away in the first picture, but with a little patience, I was able to get a wary shot of them. Their cooperation bolted the second this photo was snapped!

Houston is the number one market in the United States of the nasty(but necessary) heartworm treatment, Immiticide. I would love to see Houston lose that negative

designation!

Cricket the bionic chihuahua needs a home

This precious baby came into a Houston shelter with an old leg fracture and it looked as if amputation was going to be his only

option. At only 4 lbs, his front leg near his ankle was so shattered that there wasn't enough viable bone to

repair, so a bone graft from his shoulder was required. Dr Jeff Chalkley of Westbury Animal Hospital who has helped me many times, put in a tremendous

effort to repair the radius and ulna. The repair was so extensive there wasn't even time to neuter Cricket, but it has been done now! Dr Chalkley put in a metal plate but warned me that it might not work. It was very hard to go thru the weeks of rehab not knowing if we would still have to amputate at the end. A dog carries 60% of its weight on the front legs, so life is much harder than if a rear leg is amputated.

Yea for Dr Chalkley and Cricket-it worked and Cricket plays with other chihuahuas as if nothing

ever happened.

He is ready for an all adult home that is prepared to have surgery in the future if the plate shifts

or needs to be replaced for any reason.
