Two containment items for well behaved dogs:)

This is called a Pet Home by Pet Mate. I like that it is canvas and has windows, but it does not have a solid floor, so only for small critters. My vote would be up to about 10 lbs. If you hold by the bottom, a decent travel option. I like the curved vs squared interior for scared babies; easier to retrieve them!  9.00
Ooops, can't find the rotate button. This is also intended for low stress pets, as it has some great chewing possibilities! This is good for camping or storefront adoptions with calm babies as it is lightweight and folds up nicely. This one is in excellent condition. Pet Stuff Resale also has a red and blue one. By Sport Pet this is 18"x32" and is 14.00

Wheel Away transports dogs in style, saves your back

The Wheel Away is one of the sturdiest doggie "totes" I have ever evaluated. In fact, it is so conducive
to being rolled on the ground that I do not recommend it to be used as a back pack, for which it is also
made. This is the medium size, up to maybe 15 lbs. (I never trust manufacturer recommendations due to experience, I always test with real animals.) Tugboat weighs 12 lbs.
The materials are canvas and mesh. It does zip all the way to enclose the dog entirely if wanted.
This is in excellent condition. I do not think it was ever even used.
$45.00 at Pet Stuff Resale

The hesitant model Tugboat is my own dog. I fostered his litter (during Hurricane Ike!) after his owner turned them in as an unexpected litter. I so hope he got the mom spayed, he did keep her.
She was a Blue Heeler and he said one of the dads was a chihuahua. I thought Tugboat was the runt, but then figured out his size is the chihuahua influence. When even his female littermates weighed 2
lbs., he was barely 1 lb.

(His 2 sisters Mandy and Pandy are still up for adoption. They are stunning looking, look like long haired miniature Blue heelers at 15 lbs each. Yes, I have pictures.)

Dante, Whippet mix with broken leg, looking for a home in March

Dante came into a shelter as a stray with a broken
radius and ulna and a great personality! He obviously plays well with others. He is also crate
trained.
Dante has a darling set of  spotted Spock ears as well. (It was impossible to hold him, watch Devon
and get Dante to face me for  a picture when he
HAD to play!)
He is only a year old, but still very well behaved and weighs about 20 lbs.
He is not chewing his cast as much as he was
and is very patient about wearing a sock and baggie
when he goes outside.
My many years with greyhound adoptions gave me an interest in orthopedic cases, so it has been enjoyable having him in foster care. I will be equally happy when he finds his great new permanent home!

Kirby and Rocky also shoppers at Pet Stuff Resale

This is a continuation of the previous post; same family!
Kirby, on the left and Rocky the chihuahua are consumer testing the oh so chic traveling cube their momma purchased
recently. Note it even has a drawer below for stashing travel
treats, sunglasses and sun screen for those beach moseys
in their stroller.
I so enjoy being the personal shopper for this family!
(The promised photo of Bijoux on the former toddler bed/now big dog bed was corrupted and will not download.)

Pet Cargo 800 not just for air travel says Pet Stuff Resale

In fact it feels a little lightweight to me for air travel, but this is a
UK product and a dog flew from London to Houston in it and it is
in excellent condition.
It has multiple great features. The storage tray on top is good sized, doesn't take up space inside the crate, but also removeable for when it is not needed.
The wheels are also removeable, but I like the wheels for a nontravel reason. This would be great for fostering puppies or kittens(only when small) and cleaning is much easier when a crate can be rolled around.
The dual opening and removeable door is great also for the cleaning factor.
Yet another feature that I have never seen on any other crate
are the holes in each corner. This is for anchoring during transit;
while I do not care for crates in the back of trucks, I have to do it myself at times and we are in Texas, "The Truck State"!
The food and water containers are also larger than most. In every other plastic crate I have seen, every size crate has the same size container. That is a not a good option for bigger dogs traveling and looks to me like just a cost saving item from the manufacturer. I say cut corners elsewhere.
This multi use huge (29.5x30x41)crate is sold new for 134.00 on websites I have seen. At Pet Stuff Resale it is 80.00.

Heartworms are SO preventable say these chihuahuas

Both of these precious babies came into a shelter with heartworms. As small as they both are, the treatment is much harder on them, more expensive and more time consuming.
Skeeter on the left also has a grade 4 heart murmur, common in heartworm positive dogs, which

makes his treatment even trickier. Rica on the right came in from a backyard breeder of another

breed, which just compounds this felony.

They both wanted the camera to go away in the first picture, but with a little patience, I was able to get a wary shot of them. Their cooperation bolted the second this photo was snapped!

Houston is the number one market in the United States of the nasty(but necessary) heartworm treatment, Immiticide. I would love to see Houston lose that negative
designation!

At Pet Stuff Resale a doll bed makes a great dog bed

Dog beds needn't all be round and fuzzy according to Flambeau, my 10 plus year old model.
This wooden crib is a great way to keep the dog off of the floor and contains dog hair better. Even though it is on rockers, it doesnt move much and Flambeau has no trouble jumping into it. The bed is 24"x 14 1/2 and the sides are 8" high.
It has small rosebuds on each end.
At Pet Stuff Resale this dog bed is 14.00; an inexpensive duplicate of the furniture type bedding that is popular today.

Flambeau is a frequent model, not because he is my pride and joy, but because he LOVES the camera
and loves going into things; esp very small cat cages, go figure.

Update on Buster

That handsome red dachshund in the previous post about extended leads was up for adoption thru CAP. Due to being a little aggressive in his cage he couldn't be upfront on display, which makes it harder to find him a home.
Several of us were spreading the word about him and a nice couple came and adopted him last week. He left the shelter wagging his tail!

Extended leads for dogs-both great and terrible

My first experience with extended leads years ago at a fun run was bad. Someone let a small child hold a greyhound using one. When the child dropped the end the dog bolted near a street which was a disaster. The dog was already in a strange place and with greyhound speed got into even more unfamiliar territory very fast. Every time the plastic base hit the pavement the noise scared the dog even more.
By some miracle she was caught safely, but I swore off extended leads right then.

I don't recommend them in crowded places such as dog parks and busy neighborhoods. One is too far away to protect their dog if a loose dog or aggressive dog on a leash tangles with it or a child approaches it inappropriately. For this reason they are also banned from most dog walks/runs.

My friend and dachsie expert Greta pointed a major advantage; with an extended lead, the leash part (usually) stays above the dog so doesn't get caught around the legs repeatedly, ruining the entire outing! Her precious baby Raleigh the dachshund noted that it facilitates hunting/sniffling
which dachsies are required to do by DNA.

I have been won over about extended leads with SOME small dogs. My chihuahua and poodle expert Rebecca reports that dogs have broken their necks while running after something and I never recommend them with chihuahuas. Thanks to her for correcting me on that-it is an excellent point. I am still not much of a fan with
larger dogs, the control just isn't there if needed.
I do not use them for my personal dogs

Buster in the picture is a 4 year old male looking for a home. He is very sweet when not in a cage
and quite the tail wagger. He is available thru Citizens for Animal Protection in Houston.

Your small dog needs a Bark A Lounger!

One of the neatest things about what I do for a living is finding unusual items
that can be recycled into pet items.

Diva the chihuahua puppy is posing on what she thinks is her throne. A blue corderoy
child's recliner is perfect for napping but small enough that jumping down isn't
a risk. The chair is only 26 inches at the top and 21 inches wide. A nice feature is the material reaching between the chair itself and the foot rest; it keeps a dog from falling between the pieces. Safety is a big concern of mine when choosing pet items to resell.
The best part.....ta da...at Pet Stuff Resale it is only 21.00!

Diva is also looking for the perfect home. She is a whopping 3 lbs and wants an all adult home with a buddy dog. She was a stray turned into a Houston shelter and will
be spayed before going to her new home; I am her foster.
Getting her to remain still for a better picture would have required stapling
her paws to the arm of the lounger:)

Pet Stuff Resale mascot models a wire crate for sale

As in all of my pets, Alfie is a rescue dog. Like many rescue dogs, his history is murky....He was only a year old so when he paid absolutely no attention to me and ran around like a one year old, it didn't click for about 3 weeks that he is deaf!
When he is hungry he barks nonstop until he is fed. I've tried that "Ignore him
so you aren't reinforcing the behavior" stuff-ha, he out barks my patience every time.
If I turn around and shake my finger at him, he does this little twirl, sits down
and proceeds to bark again. This is of course hilarious to everyone but me!

Alfie is a great "hook" for the Pet Stuff Resale booth where ever we set up, so he does earn his keep and he stays nicely in a carry pouch for a whole event.

I am frequently asked if he can bark since he can't hear. I have yet to find a diplomatic way of saying "there's nothing wrong with his throat, it's his ears!"

Alfie is pictured modeling in a small wire crate currently for sale at Pet Stuff Resale for 20.00. Alfie is 7 lbs and up to a 10 lb dog could fit easily into it.

Custom Pet Steps for sale at Pet Stuff Resale

These are so nicely made and better yet, not plastic! The treads are removeable for toy storage but are made so they are still very stable while in place so your baby will not trip and fall off. Top height is 15".
I do not recommend dogs being allowed on the bed due to the dominance problems it creates but certainly understand the looks I get when I utter such blasphemy to clients! (Ask dog trainers)
